Mercedes Prepares Major Upgrade Package for Canadian Grand Prix in Bid to Maintain 2026 Advantage

Mercedes is set to arrive at the Canadian Grand Prix with its first major upgrade package of the 2026 Formula 1 season, aiming to protect its competitive edge as pressure from rival teams continues to grow.

The Brackley-based squad, which has emerged as one of the strongest forces under Formula 1’s new regulations, is expected to introduce significant developments to the W17 in Montreal. The upgrade program, led by deputy technical director Simone Resta, represents Mercedes’ first large-scale technical evolution of the season.

Despite a strong start to 2026, Mercedes has seen Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull close the performance gap through aggressive development programs introduced over recent races. As a result, the Canadian Grand Prix is shaping up to be a crucial moment in the championship’s technical battle.

Driver George Russell had previously indicated that Mercedes was targeting Canada for a more substantial upgrade, acknowledging the rapid progress made by competing teams and emphasizing the need for Mercedes to respond decisively.

According to reports from the paddock, the new package is expected to focus primarily on aerodynamic efficiency, car balance, and improved performance through medium- and high-speed corners — key performance areas at the demanding Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The Canadian Grand Prix could therefore become a defining point in the 2026 campaign. If the package delivers the expected gains, Mercedes may strengthen its position at the front of the field. However, should the improvements fall short of expectations, the battle with McLaren and Ferrari could intensify considerably in the coming rounds.
